Of note: news about center students, faculty and staff

The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics is pleased to recognize the accomplishments and activities of its students and staff:

Shreya Bhardwaj, a senior in economics and women’s studies and an Elizabeth Hoffman and Brian R. Binger Legacy of Heroines scholar for the 2014-2015 academic year; Janet Horsager, the Beth Bierbaum Legacy of Heroines scholar from 2011-2014, and Kathleen Roberts, a senior in mathematics with a minor in Spanish and the Bierbaum Legacy of Heroines scholar for the 2014-2015 academic year, were among the 76 Iowa State students initiated into Phi Beta Kappa during a ceremony on May 4. Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary society. It recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement in a broad curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences.

Bhardwaj was also awarded the Barbara Mack Award – a named recognition within Phi Beta Kappa – during the May 4 ceremony. She is from Mumbai, India. Horsager is from Minneapolis, Minn., and graduated in May with majors in economics and music. Roberts is from Wykoff, Minn.

Aja Holmes, a graduate teaching assistant for the Catt Center during the 2013-2014 academic year, has accepted a position at Sacramento State University as the senior associate director of residence life and will start in July. Holmes co-taught LAS 151x and 152x, “Dean’s Leadership Seminar,” with College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Beate Schmittmann during the 2013-2014 academic year. She received her doctorate in higher education with a concentration in social justice from Iowa State in May. Holmes is from Chicago, Ill.

Lissandra Villa, a senior double majoring in journalism and mass communication and political science, was one of three Iowa State students who were recently chosen as 2014 Cargill global scholars. The Cargill Global Scholars program provides financial support and leadership development opportunities to undergraduate students from around the world. Scholarships are awarded to talented, high performing students studying in a field relevant to Cargill’s world of food, agriculture and risk management. Villa is an Elverna Christian Legacy of Heroines scholar from Webster City, Iowa, and will be the center’s Archives of Women’s Political Communication intern for the 2014-2015 year.
