The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics is pleased to recognize the accomplishments and activities of its faculty, staff, students and alumni:
Cameron Beatty, leadership studies lecturer, authored “Latin@ Student Organizations as Pathways to Leadership Development,” a book chapter in “Latina/o College Student Leadership: Emerging Theory, Promising Practice.”
Dianne Bystrom, director, moderated the seventh annual Family Impact Seminar on Oct. 22 in Des Moines, Iowa, on “Toxic Stress and Child Development: Costs, Consequences and Policy Options.” She discussed statewide initiatives on women’s leadership development during a panel presentation at The Way Up conference in Des Moines on Nov. 6. She served on a panel, “Embracing Candidates, Voters and the Media: Opportunities for Examining Political Campaign Communication,” on Nov. 21 at the National Communication Association annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Dec. 3-4, Bystrom gave seven presentations on women candidates and voters in presidential campaigns to fifth- through eighth-grade students over the course of two days at the Kids Caucus sponsored by the State Historical Society of Iowa in Des Moines. On Dec. 8, she gave a presentation on women’s leadership in higher education during a luncheon sponsored by the West Bank Women Impact Network in Des Moines.
Jennifer Musgrove, a first-year graduate student in the teaching English as a second language/applied linguistics master’s degree program with a specialization in Spanish, is an ambassador and Spanish teaching assistant in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Iowa State University. She taught two sections of Spanish 101 in the fall 2015 semester and is currently teaching two sections of Spanish 102. Musgrove’s long-term goals include teaching university level Spanish and co-directing a study abroad program. While earning her bachelor’s degree in Spanish at ISU in 2015, Musgrove was a Lauri K. and James R. Young Legacy of Heroines scholar from 2011-2015.
Kelly Winfrey, assistant professor of journalism and communication and coordinator of research and outreach for the Catt Center, presented “Campaigning on Facebook: Obama and Romney’s 2012 Facebook Strategy” and “About Me: Female Candidates Self-Presentation Styles on Campaign Websites” Nov. 18-22 at the National Communication Association’s annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. Winfrey also gave seven presentations at the Kids Caucus sponsored by the State Historical Society of Iowa in Des Moines on Dec. 3-4.
