2016 Catt Prize

The Catt Center is accepting applications for the 2016 Carrie Chapman Catt Prize for Research on Women and Politics through a postmark deadline of Nov. 23.

This annual competition is designed to encourage and reward scholars embarking on significant research in the area of women and politics. Since the first prize was awarded in 1994, 90 projects proposed by 116 researchers have been supported.

Research projects may address any topic related to women and politics. Scholars at any level, from graduate students to tenured faculty members, may apply. Proposals are blind-reviewed by a faculty committee.

The prize includes a $2,000 cash award for each project selected. Honorable mention awards of $1,000 per project also may be given.

To be considered for the 2016 prize, applicants must submit the following materials, postmarked by Nov. 23, 2016: completed cover sheet (PDF), biographical statement of one page or less for each author, and four copies of the project description. The project description should be a total of 5-10 pages in length, double-spaced in 12-point font and comprised of the following elements: proposal title; 150-200 word abstract summarizing the project’s purpose and content; discussion of relevant theory, contributions to literature in the field and methodology; statement and itemized budget describing how the Catt Prize will contribute to the research project; and timetable for completion of the project. The project description should also include a reference list, which is not counted in the 5-10 page limit.

As proposals are blind-reviewed, authors should not include their names in the project description.

Application packets must be mailed (not faxed or emailed) to: Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, 309 Carrie Chapman Catt Hall, 2224 Osborn Drive, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011-4009.

Awards will be announced in February 2017.
